7/21/17 Short Ride

Service day! After 5,000 miles on the road, Rascal needs a spa treatment, so an appointment at the Edmonton Harley dealer saw us out the door earlier than usual. Thunderstorms during the night brought in a very unsettled front that saw us changing into rain suits on the highway. Rolling into Edmonton dry, we settled in for a two hour oil change, general inspection and tune up. All of this is critical when you ride solo, because you want your machine with 75,000 miles to keep on rolling.

Since we arrived in Edmonton dry, we figured it was our lucky day, so we rode unsuited into the heaviest rain we have encountered to date on this trip. Too late, we pulled over, suited up and rode into sunshine. It's always a gamble when the clouds start to build, and second guessing the weather in the Plains is a hopeless game.

No pictures today because the camera was safely tucked away from possible storms. The upside is that we didn't encounter any of the hail or tornados predicted with this weather pattern. Dicey riding today! But Rascal is happy and we are dry in Edson, planning how to circumvent the fires to the west, the smoke of which we have just begun to smell.

Weather events and nature's quirks always impact open riders more than those in cages. Watching for working windshield wipers on oncoming cars is the most up-to-date weather report we can get. Sky reading becomes an art. We have traveled this trip under the sun. If this small shower is the only rain we see, then we are golden. But whatever comes, we'll face it together and feel the thrill of meeting Mother Nature head on.

Waiting for Rascal
